What causes acidosis and why is it so common?

Latent acidosis, which develops slowly and negatively affects physical and mental performance, general well-being and health, is much more widespread than many people think. The main reason is our diet, which is often rich in animal proteins and grain products that cause an acidic effect in the body, while lacking in alkaline foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

In this case, a widespread misconception about acid-base balance should be disproved. Acidification of the body is not related to the consumption of acidic and alkaline foods as such. Although fruits contain acids, their metabolism in the body has an alkaline effect due to the complex alkaline minerals.

In addition to an unbalanced diet, fasting or a fat-reduction diet can also shift the acid-base balance to the acidic side, as fat breakdown produces so-called keto acids, which can contribute to acidification and disrupt metabolism.

What are the negative consequences of body acidification?

Long-term acidosis does not have clear symptoms and develops slowly. Although the symptoms are relatively non-specific, they can have a significant negative impact on health, well-being and performance.

The effects of acidification on general well-being and physical and mental performance include fatigue, exhaustion, reduced concentration and reduced physical endurance, nervousness and severely reduced stress tolerance.

Acidification can also harm health, reducing the body's resistance to various diseases and causing muscle and joint pain. There are two reasons for this. First, acidification can eventually reduce bone stability because the body, when its acid-buffering systems reach the limit, begins to use the minerals stored in the bones as additional acid buffers. Second, acidification can reduce the elasticity of tendons, ligaments and muscles, as the body begins to accumulate acids in the connective tissue, reducing the ability of this tissue to store water.

How does Base Powder work against acidification?

Base Powder contains a wide spectrum of synergistically acting substances, which are necessary to regulate the acid-alkaline balance and prevent or reduce acidification.

Base Powder does not contain "classic" but useless bicarbonates such as sodium bicarbonate (soda). Although these bicarbonates have a strong alkaline effect, they are already neutralized in the stomach by stomach acid and therefore cannot contribute to deacidification of the body. In addition, soda can be harmful because it increases sodium in the body, which can promote high blood pressure, and over time, it stimulates the production of stomach acid, which can lead to heartburn, stomach discomfort and bowel problems.

Ingredients and their effect:

• Citrates: The minerals in Base Powder are in the form of citrates. In the body, citrates dissociate from minerals and act as acid buffers, binding to H+ ions that cause an acidic environment and converting to citric acid, which is metabolized in the citrate cycle to carbon dioxide.
• Potassium: Acids stored in the body's cells can only be carried out through the exchange system, which transports potassium into cells and acids out of cells. If there is a lack of potassium in the body, acids cannot be removed from the cells to a sufficient extent, so cell metabolism is disrupted.
• Calcium: Calcium is involved in buffering systems that prevent the body from becoming acidic. Adequate calcium ensures that the body does not need to use the calcium in the bones to keep these buffer systems working. In addition, additional calcium is needed to restore bone stability after a long acidification phase.
• Magnesium: Magnesium is part of many of the body's acid-buffering systems, so during acidosis, magnesium deficiency can easily occur, which can impair muscle and nervous system function and promote bone demineralization.
• Zinc: Zinc acts as a cofactor for the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which is responsible for the formation of basic bicarbonate in the body. Bicarbonate produced in the body acts as an acid buffer, reducing the acidification of the blood.
• Vitamin D: Vitamin D works synergistically with calcium and is essential for restoring a stable bone structure.
